Wet and dry riser systems are critical components of a building’s fire protection strategy, designed to provide firefighters with immediate access to a reliable water supply at various levels of a structure. What Is a Dry Riser?

A dry riser is a network of vertical pipework installed within a building, typically found in structures over 18 metres in height. Under normal conditions, these pipes are empty. In the event of a fire, firefighters connect their pumping appliance to an external inlet—usually located at ground level—allowing water to be pumped up through the system. Landing valves positioned on each floor enable quick access to water without the need to run hoses up stairwells, significantly reducing response time and physical strain.

How Often Do Dry Risers Need Testing?

In contrast, a wet riser is permanently charged with water and maintained under pressure, making it suitable for taller buildings—generally those exceeding 50 metres. Wet riser systems include storage tanks, pumps, and pressure control mechanisms to ensure a consistent and immediate water supply. Because water is readily available at all times, wet risers offer a faster response capability, which is crucial in high-rise fire scenarios where every second counts.

Both systems are subject to strict regulatory standards and must be regularly inspected and tested to ensure operational readiness. Routine maintenance includes pressure testing, valve checks, visual inspections, and flow tests. Any faults—such as leaks, corrosion, or blockages—must be addressed promptly to maintain system integrity.
